What Vitamins Does a Bariatric Patient Need?
According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), you may need the following per day, but double check with your own surgeon and/or nutritionist:
Multi-vitamin 2X per day
Calcium Citrate 1200-2000 mg per day, split into 2-3 doses. Our bodies only absorb about 500 mg at a time, so it is best to stagger them.
Iron 18-65 mg per day. Caution: Make sure your iron and calcium are taken no less than 2 hours apart! Calcium and iron block each other’s absorption.
Vitamin B12 500-1000 mcg per day, though many doctors are telling their patients to only take 2-3 times per week.
These are the basics that any bariatric patient will need.
