GYM ETIQUETTE TIP #3:
Wipe the equipment you just used with anti-bacterial sanitizer.
One of the most important rules of any gym is to leave it exactly as you found it.
If you used weights, you rack them when you are finished. Used a jump rope, medicine ball, or yoga mat? Yep, put them back where you got them. Sat on a weight machine and when you stood up you left behind noticeable traces of your sweaty butt? For the LOVE, wipe that down already!!
No one wants to lay down in your sweat, and you certainly don’t want that for yourself, either. Not only do those who do not wipe down the equipment risk offending the other people in the room, but they are spreading germs with their possible poor hygiene. A warm, moist environment is the perfect place for bacteria to reproduce and spread infectious illnesses.
The gym in which you patronize most assuredly supplies anti-bacterial sanitizer in a spray bottle and paper towels. Make good use of it. Take some paper towels, and drench it with the spray sanitizer. Wipe down the surfaces you touched, including those where you draped a towel or hoodie on the treadmill. Do not spray the sanitizer directly onto any machine where liquid could enter any electronic display and risk causing it to malfunction.
Now, suppose the tables are turned on you, and you want a machine that someone just left and did not wipe down. It’s tempting to just wipe it yourself, yeah? Even if you wipe it yourself, I guarantee that last person won’t even notice you are doing all the work for them, and that whole scenario is emotionally draining. Instead, approach them casually, act as if it is no big deal, and say, “Hey, would you mind wiping down that machine you just used so I can use it? Thanks!” The other people in the room are sure to agree, and gyms typically have it in their membership policy that it is required anyway, so you are in the right to do so.
Remember, wiping down equipment after use is considered the Golden Rule at any gym. Your fellow gym rats will love you all the more.
