Gym Etiquette Tip #2:
While in the locker rooms, avoid looking at anyone else in various states of undress.
This one seems common sense, am I right? However, being in the locker room six days a week, I’m surprised how often people do not practice this one bit of common courtesy.
Whether you are in the locker room, shower, bathroom, or any other changing areas, it is impolite to stare directly at someone who is not fully dressed. People vary in their comfort level of being exposed. Some are so shy, they will lock themselves into a toilet stall to change, and some so free that they will walk around fully nude and engage in conversation with whomever will chat with them back.
Have you ever been caught in a full-on conversation while sharing an open shower with a bunch of other nude people? I have–many times, in fact–and although I’m perfectly comfortable with it, I’m still careful to not stare. If you do look, make eye contact only.
Since we do not know someone well enough to know their comfort level and history of their body image, please be sensitive about where you gaze while dressing yourself.
As you are passing by others who are dressed, especially on the way in or out of the locker room, smiling and making full eye contact is a DO! 🙂
